San Pedro Waterfront Arts District presents Armchair ArtWalk Tour Moving
to Last Thursdays – August 26th, 2021 5:30pm
Hispanic Heritage Month

August 11, 2021 San Pedro, CA – The San Pedro Waterfront Arts District, in collaboration with the artists who have performed or exhibited their arts in San Pedro, is moving to Last Thursdays. We are accommodating the return of the in-person First Thursday ArtWalk on September 2nd, 2021.

The next Armchair ArtWalk Tour will be held on Zoom at 5:30pm on Last Thursday, August 26th, 2021, and hosted by Gallery Azul owners, Cora Ramirez-Vasquez, and Ray Vasquez.

Gallery Azul opened its doors on November 2nd, 2006, with a group show in honor of the 3,000-year-old Mexican celebration of life “Día de Los Muertos” (Day of the Dead). The gallery continued this tradition with themed shows for Women’s History, Teacher Appreciation, and Black Heritage months.  Gallery Azul is committed to finding high quality, collectible, cultural, and conceptual art to enhance the San Pedro Arts scene.

For the month of September of 2021, Gallery Azul will be celebrating Hispanic heritage by re-envisioning La Loteria cards portraying Mexicanos in various underrepresented professions. This is meant to inspire not only the Mexican community, but all Hispanic, Latinx, Chicano/a, and Afro LatinX in professions lacking diversity. We believe in supporting each other in the arts and by seeing what we can achieve, we can be inspired for the future.

La Lotería is the “Mexican bingo”, instead of calling out letters and numbers, the announcer calls out the image of the card that is chosen. Game boards are marked with beans or pennies. Once a player’s game board is filled, they shout, “Lotería!”

About the San Pedro Waterfront Arts District: (http://sanpedrowaterfrontartsdistrict.com/– The mission of the San Pedro Waterfront Arts District is to promote San Pedro’s authentic arts, culture and entertainment identity through advocacy, marketing and education activities.

San Pedro is home to over 90 visual artists, as well as 3 performing arts venues, art galleries and restaurants. The Arts District is anchored by the Warner Grand Theatre, a 1,500-seat historic art deco movie palace, the Little Fish Theatre, presenting repertory theater in a converted garage, the Grand Annex (a project of the Grand Vision Foundation), and the Loft Studios, a three-story warehouse with a concentration of fine artists. The Arts District’s streets are lined with artists’ live/workspaces and each month they open their doors to the FirstThursday ArtWalk, in operation since 1997. In 2017, San Pedro was designated as one of 14 California Cultural Districts by the Sacramento based California Arts Council.

The San Pedro Waterfront Arts District believes that public art is a vital way to make art accessible and commissioned professional artists to paint 25 DOT utility boxes throughout San Pedro, along with two wall murals in the downtown core. In June 2019, the Arts District launched Adventures in Public Art – a six-week mural workshop program, designed to engage participants in public art projects, become more astute arts enthusiasts and to foster a sense of community ownership and inclusion.
