Letter from Council District 15 below:

Dear Community Leaders,

Councilmember Buscaino is excited to announce the Buscaino Community Grants Program. We are looking for bold ideas for project proposals in the communities of Watts, Wilmington, Harbor City, Harbor Gateway, and San Pedro. Organizations can apply for grant amounts between $10,000 and $100,000.

The purpose of this program is to assist our local non-profit organizations in improving the community by providing them with a one-time grant. We hope that this reinvestment program empowers our local nonprofits to enact the changes their neighborhoods need to make the most impact.

The program will operate in three phases: first non-profits submit their proposals, second, the proposals will be vetted to make sure they meet all of the requirements, and finally, there will be a community voting period where residents will choose which projects are funded with their votes. We encourage local non-profit organizations to submit their proposals to our application portal starting April 12th.

The process begins with non-profit organizations submitting their proposals for consideration. The application phase will be open between April 12, 2021, at 9 AM through April 30, 2021, until 11:59 PM. Proposals must address at least one of the following categories: Homelessness, Racial Disparities, City Services/Beautification, Economic Development, Non-profit/Community Investment, Recreation/Youth Programming, and/or Reimagining Public Safety.

In the second phase of the program, all proposals will be reviewed to ensure that they meet the outlined criteria in phase one and have also submitted all the required documentation. The vetting phase will take place during the week of May 3rd, 2021.

Once applications have been cleared, community members will have the chance to vote for the project of their choice during the third phase which will determine which programs will be funded. To maximize community improvements and ensure that each project has a chance to receive the community grant, projects will only compete against other projects within the same neighborhood. Moreover, community members who vote on the projects are limited to individuals who reside in the City of Los Angeles. The community voting period will be from May 10th to May 31st.

Following the voting period, the votes will be tallied and the winners will be announced at a to-be-determined date in June!

Our office can’t wait to see the transformative proposals we will receive. Thank you for your interest in improving our community and our neighborhoods! We look forward to seeing these projects unfold while our communities thrive. Learn more about the program at LA15th.com/buscainogrants.
