In Councilman Buscaino’s district, Wilmington, and much of the Port are above one of the largest oil fields in the region, with numerous active wells in close proximity to housing.  San Pedro is home to a massive butane and propane storage facility, also right next to housing. And both Harbor City and Wilmington are home to 3 oil refineries, one of which is the largest on the West Coast. The City of Los Angeles needs an expert on staff to help oversee these facilities and ensure public health and safety is protected. This is why this week’s approval of the creation of a Petroleum and Natural Gas Administration and Safety Office by the Los Angeles City Council is an important step forward for the harbor communities.
