HCBF Awards 19 Community Benefit Grants to San Pedro & Wilmington Organizations

SAN PEDRO, CA-The Harbor Community Benefit Foundation (HCBF) has awarded $506,000 in grants to 19 organizations serving the harbor communities of San Pedro and Wilmington.

The pilot program attracted a wide array of proposals that addressed five program priorities: beautification, education and training, safety, employment, and community initiatives. Selected from a pool of 62 applicants, grantees were chosen for their potential to collaborate and for a demonstrated commitment to enhance the communities of San Pedro and Wilmington.

The highly competitive Community Benefit Grant program, funded by the Port Community Mitigation Trust Fund, received a full vote of support by the Port of Los Angeles Board of Harbor Commissioners.

“We are beyond thrilled at the nineteen grant applications that have been approved for funding for the upcoming year,” said Councilman Joe Buscaino, 15th Council District of Los Angeles. “One of these applications includes a $45,000 grant that will directly fund improvements at the Wilmington Recreation Center. I am looking forward to the finished product of these grants, and celebrate the success of all applicants.”

HCBF’s Community Benefit grantee projects and programs include: beautification and cleanup of streets, medians, and truck routes; restoration of a nature preserve; environmental education programs and field trips for LAUSD students; construction and maintenance of community gardens; world music education programming at Title I public schools; workforce development programs; wetlands, marine life, and maritime internship programs; pre-apprenticeship programs for at-risk youth; exercise and recreational equipment and programs; and a series of community art murals.
